Being a student can be expensive and overwhelming. Financial worries can be a big stress factor leading to poor mental health, anxiety, depression and more. Although it’s easier said then done, try not to stress as you won’t be the first or the last student to be worried about finances. Here are some ways to budget as a student.
Not spending money on lunch
As tempting as a Tesco meal deal is, the price adds up over time – especially since the price has increased. There are plenty of alternatives when it comes to what to have for lunch, including when you’re on campus. You can make a salad, sandwich, wrap or, even, leftovers and bring it in!
Making use of student discounts
One major plus of university, apart from the degree, is the student discount. Most shops accept student discount whether it’s through your ID card, UniDays or StudentBeans. Every little helps after all!
Make use of university resources
DMU Money Advice offer appointments for any of your financial queries. You can book these appointments through your My Gateway login or by emailing sfw@dmu.ac.uk. After a quick diagnostic appointment, you will be offered a Money Doctor appointment where an advisor can sit with you and review your finances. These allow you to talk about money management, budgeting and to investigate student funding issues with Student Finance England.
The University of Leicester also provide support for any student struggling with their finances or have any money worries. They have a variety of tips on their website, as well as, a Budgeting Guide.
Are you eligible for any grants or allowances?
As well as Student Finance’s maintenance loans, there are other grants and allowances that you may be eligible for. For example, there is Disabled Student’s Allowance, which many don’t realise they are eligible for. Both DMU and UOL offer different scholarships and bursaries depending on your circumstances – so they are worth having a look at.
